The man sat alone at the candle lit dinner
finished his food and sat awhile longer.
He looked across the table and raised his glass
“Heres to us! Merry Christmas”.
Jack frost his companion as he sat there
looking longingly at the empty chair.
He stood up, dawned his coat,
and walked away humming a sad note.
Smiles and laughter of couples near by
caused a few tears to fill his eye.
The plans were perfect as the clear night sky
until she had told him that this was goodbye.
He had reserved the table months in advance;
polished every detail, leaving nothing to chance.
“A Christmas never to be forgotten”, he thought
while staring down at the small wrapped box.
She had let him believe he was everything,
but that is the problem with happy endings,
they always seem just out of reach.
Then a voice from inside started to teach
that he had missed the point of love.
It is not an emotion or attraction,
but a gift from above.
Too consumed by his sadness
he failed to remember
why he celebrated this day in December.
He was no longer to love this girl
but he still had a gift to offer the world.
He still had a purpose and dream
because the Son of God set him free.
Not everyone we love will love us back
but this reality will not change the fact
that you’re a gift to someone.
You have a love ready to give to ‘the one’
until then: remember God’s Son.
Remember the gift worth giving
is found in a life worth living.
Be the gift you were meant to be.
Start today, on Christmas Eve.
